What Was The LA Weight Loss Scam?
Losing weight seems like it’d be simple when you listen to ads for LA Weight Loss. “I went from a size 24 to a size 6,” says Sharla Pincock. “I lost 150 pounds, thanks to LA Weight Loss! If I can do it, you can too,” she cheerily adds. Their website promises to “target the barriers that interfere with weight loss, help boost you over the plateau and get you back on track to reaching your weight loss goals.” They say they offer a healthy meal plan and “highly motivational visits,” but former clients say the only thing they were “motivated” to do was waste all their money on the program’s expensive foods, when they should have looked into natural weight loss instead.
LA Weight Loss was founded in 1989 by entrepreneur Vahan Karian. Soon more than 800 weight loss program centers opened across North America and Europe. Their message is simple: decrease calories to 1,100 – 1,800, exercise, modify portion sizes and eat a more balanced diet. There is no calorie counting per say, but the diet plans are based on choosing two protein servings, three fruit servings, three vegetable servings, two starch servings, two fat servings and two protein snacks. Dieters will meet with private counselors who will go over medical history, eating habits, lifestyle choices, favorite foods and activity requirements for each individual. At face value, it sounds simple enough. However, a number of former clients and ex-employees are complaining that this method of losing weight is not only misleading and unrealistic, but also not based on any real science.
Washington Attorney General Rob McKenna ran two separate investigations into the LA Weight Loss franchise in his state. McKenna concluded that these weight loss programs “were engaged in a classic bait and switch scam,” and that they “deceptively advertised a low-priced diet only to pad the price by selling clients hundreds, even thousands of dollars in bars, supplements and shakes.” Back in 2005, the business franchise was required to reimburse consumers $800,000 who were manipulated and misled into buying an exorbitant amount of weight loss products. “We believe that consumers were initially told the program would cost only dollars a week, there would be no additional costs, and they could use their own food,” McKenna said. “But once customers had paid hundreds of dollars to enroll, LA Weight Loss staff persistently reinforced that those customers needed to spend hundreds of dollars more on supplements and food products to successfully lose weight.”
Oregon Attorney General John Kroger says more than 300 Oregonians were awarded $180,000 in refunds because the franchise had no scientific evidence to back up their health claims regarding their weight loss supplements and when sued, all the LA Weight Loss centers in Oregon promptly closed, without warning. Kroger says to protect themselves from weight loss program scams, consumers should be on the look-out for products lacking scientific evidence, products sold only online/TV/mail, seller claims that you’ll lose weight without exercise or dieting, “miraculous” or “effortless” marketing claims, one ingredient that leads to success, large upfront payments, long-term contracts, urgent limited-time offers, “free” trials that involve credit card information and promises like “drop three sizes in one week” or “lose 37 pounds in only two weeks guaranteed!” The Better Business Bureau warns, “Avoid being lured in by exaggerated before and after pictures or unrealistic weight loss claims.”
