Why is my LCD tv picking up pay-per-view channels for free?
I’m at college and i just got a new sony bravia lcd tv and i noticed i’m picking up channels that my old tube tv never found , like HD cbs, fox channels. i also noticed that it’s picking up channels with movies that are only showing on pay-per-view channels. i just turn the channel and these movies are on…why do i get to see them for free?? also…we have basic cable here
Cable system signals are in one of two formats-NTSC for analog channels and QAM for digital channels (both SD and HD).
Older TVs, even some HD sets, did not have QAM tuners. So, your old set could only receive the analog channels, unless you used a cable box.
Your new set has a QAM tuner, so you can receive any unscrambled digital channels your cable system provides.
Cable systems are required to carry the local, over the air channels, without encryption. So that is why tyou are receiving channels like HD CBS.
In some systems, the PPV channels aren’t scrambled. Since no one could previously receive them, without a cable box, this wasn’t an issue for the cable provider. Now that people are acquiring TVs with QAM tuners, I imagine this will become an issue. Enjoy it while you can.
